Orton-Gillingham

“Teaching reading IS rocket science.”

– Louisa Moats

What is Orton-Gillingham?

Orton Gillingham is the gold standard for students with reading struggles or Dyslexia.

Orton-Gillingham is an approach to reading instruction that was developed in the early 20th century. It aligns with the “science of reading“ which is a term that refers to the research that reading experts, especially cognitive scientists, have conducted on how we learn to read. While all children benefit from Orton-Gillingham instruction, many students require this type of instruction to learn to read with efficiency. Orton-Gillingham reading lessons include the following components:

  • Individualized
  • Multisensory
  • Diagnostic & Prescriptive
  • Explicit
  • Systematic and Structured
  • Sequential, Incremental, & Cumulative
  • Cognitive
  • Emotionally Sound
